Boston Children's Museum

Art, Children's, Culture

Boston Children's Museum (BCM) was founded in 1913 by a dedicated group of teachers who wanted to expose city children to objects from the natural world and also create an innovative center for the exchange of materials and ideas that would advance the teaching of science. BCM has evolved into an internationally recognized children's museum that develops and delivers informal education for children in the areas of science, culture, health, and the arts. From 1962 to 1986, under the leadership of children?s museum revolutionary Michael Spock, the Museum pioneered the development of child-centered, interactive exhibitions, a model now used throughout the world to engage learners of all ages and all levels of knowledge and ability.

We work to preserve the cultural artifacts of Dorchester’s past to inspire the imaginations of future generations. The purpose of the Dorchester Historical Society, founded in 1843 and incorporated in 1891, is to collect, preserve, and disseminate knowledge of the history of that section of the City of Boston which was formerly the Town of Dorchester; to hold, and aid in the preservation of, historic buildings and sites in the area; to care for, and from time to time, exhibit such articles of historic or antiquarian interest as may come into its possession.

For many years the Society has been actively interested in preserving the traditions and records of Dorchester and its people, from the earliest settlement in 1630 to the present time.

Eternal Presence by John Wilson, a monumental bronze head rises on a nearby knoll adjacent to an outcropping of Puddingstone boulders, the rocks for which Roxbury is named. Abbotsford, originally named Oak Bend, is the best example of Victorian High Gothic domestic architecture in Boston and is on the National Historic Register.

Art

It's as if each piece in the collection has a secret. Each piece held special meaning to its owner who's wish it was to be donated to the Milton Art Museum. Items came from local families and collectors who believed art was to shared and supported. From homes, through travels, and via private collections, the museum proudly exhibits over 270 objects of Asian and Western origin. This is the spirit in which the museum was founded.
Our vision is to maintain the mission of the Milton Art Museum which is to exist as a local cultural center to exhibit art objects for the enjoyment of adults and children.
