When she was commissioned in 1914, the USS TEXAS was the most powerful weapon in the world. She is now the only surviving U.S. naval vessel to have seen service in both World Wars.

BSNM is open to the public six days of the week (Monday through Saturday), conducting tours for the general public and area schools, in addition to providing education programming for middle to high school students. Among its many outreach programs, BSNM participates in parades, gives historical lectures, and sponsors a youth drill team. The Houston Maritime Museum features over 150 models from around the world representing ships from ancient history through our nation's modern navy and commercial ships. Models include battleships, destroyers, submarines, aircraft carriers, clipper ships, side-and stern-wheel paddleboats, sailing warships, ships of the age of exploration, modern merchant ships, freighters, tankers, and semisubmersibles. In addition, the museum is home to a world class collection of marine navigation belonging to retired Navy Lieutenant Commander John Luykx. This collection includes astrolabes, nautical quadrants, sextants and many other tools of maritime navigation.
