The Altaville Schoolhouse, located in the settlement of that name in Calaveras County, California, is one of the best preserved of the proverbial one-room little red schoolhouses in California. Built of brick in 1858 and actively used until 1950, the little school witnessed the instruction of hundreds of children from the Mother Lode region. When it was closed the building began to deteriorate, but by good fortune it was located on property which became the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Altaville Fire Station. Through the efforts of CAL FIRE the building was identified as an important historical structure worthy of preservation.

The present 1,800 acre Camulos Ranch, established by Ygnacio del Valle in 1853, was carved out of the 48,612 acre Rancho San Francisco, granted in 1839 to Ygnacio's father Antonio del ValIe, majordomo and administrator of Mission San Fernando. Camulos was located at the western boundary of the rancho and was originally a Tataviam Indian village known as Kamulus. The San Fernando Mission used the area as early as 1804 for raising small animals and crops grown by the Indians, who numbered 416 when visited by Inspector General of the Missions in 1839.

In 1980 the Tehama County Museum foundation was created by a group of local citizens to preserve and exhibit artifacts that represent the cultural heritage of Tehama County. -- For years a highway sign on Highway 99E directed travelers to the First Tehama County Court House, which was to the Masonic building. In 1962 when the Masons were celebrating their 100th Anniversary, they arranged to have Superior Court Judge Curtiss Wetter hold court there for one session. However, the act did not succeed in saving the California Historical Landmark designation for the building. In 1980 the building was designated as a National Historic Site. The Red Barn is the former dairy barn of the old County Hospital and stands proudly as a dominant landmark along Mountain Ranch Road. The Red Barn Museum showcases Calaveras County’s rich history in agriculture, mining, logging, and ranching. Actual mining carts, farm wagons, and other donated objects make up the elaborate displays. Many of the displays were made possible through the help and donations of community members and local businesses. We thank everyone involved for their continued support.

The Tidewater Southern Railway Historical Society maintains a railroad museum at the San Joaquin County Fair grounds in Building #1 behind the Administrative Office. The Historical Society is dedicated to preserving and disseminating the historical record of the Tidewater Southern Railway. Their museum displays artifacts and information of the Tidewater Southern along with a railroad display that depicts many of the sites along the Tidewater Southern.
