The permanent exhibit at the Vermont History Museum is entitled, Freedom and Unity: One Ideal, Many Stories. Visitors walk through time and experience a full-sized Abenaki wigwam, a re-creation of the Catamount Tavern where the Green Mountain Boys gathered, a railroad station complete with working telegraph and a WWII living room furnished with period music and periodicals.
Our mission is to collect, preserve and share the stories of Vermont's history. These stories not only tell the past, but they give meaning and understanding to the present and future.
The award-winning History Museum opened in March 2004 and represents Vermont's history from 1600 to the present day.
Treasures from Ethan Allen's treatise Reason, the Only Oracle of Man to the doll of former First Lady Grace Coolidge. Artifacts reflecting the entire history of the state, every geographical area and every chronological period.
Research collections can be found at the Vermont History Center, located in Barre, Vermont. The curious researcher will find a variety of resources documenting the history and people of Vermont including books and pamphlets dating from 1700 to the present. There are also unique letters, diaries, ledgers, scrapbooks and maps. The place for genealogists.
