Description

The LSU Museum of Art is a dynamic venue located on the fifth floor of the Shaw Center for the Arts in downtown Baton Rouge. In addition to holding one of the largest university-affiliated art collections in the South, the museum presents world-class touring exhibitions of regional, American, and European painting, sculpture, decorative arts, works on paper, and photography.

The Museum's 5000-work collection is highlighted in galleries of American and British portraiture and decorative arts, American Arts and Crafts pottery, Chinese Jade, and modern and contemporary paintings and sculptures, with a focus on Southern artists. The LSU Museum of Art is a gateway connecting the University and the community at large to a diverse range of artistic styles and periods.

Get Involved!

The LSU Museum of Art is looking for volunteers to assist daily in its offices, store, and galleries. The Museum offers the public a wide range of art exhibitions. We are located downtown, in the Shaw Center for the Arts overlooking the Mississippi River.

Volunteers are needed in many areas including visitor services, our Museum store, collections management assistants, and art handlers/preparatory workers. If you have an background in studio art or art history, retail, or clerical, and would like to be part of one of Baton Rouge’s most exciting tourist attractions, please call LeAnn Russo at 225-389-7210

Mission

The LSU Museum of Art (LSU MOA) collects, conserves, exhibits, and interprets the fine and decorative arts entrusted to its care and stewardship, providing opportunities for research, education, and enjoyment to students, scholars, and visitors. It sets itself apart through the strength of its collection and the breadth of research opportunities offered by the Louisiana State University (LSU) academic community. Further, it engages collaboratively with its Shaw Center for the Arts partners to enrich the cultural life of Baton Rouge by offering a range of cultural activities.

History

The Anglo-American Art Museum opened in 1962 in the Memorial Tower on LSU's Baton Rouge campus. The museum and its collection were established through a generous gift to LSU in 1959 from an anonymous donor who wished to support an institution that would illustrate British and continental influences on early American art and culture in the South. The museum's significant collection of American and British portraiture, furniture, and decorative arts grew from this foundation.

In 1992, the university changed the name of the museum to the LSU Museum of Art to reflect how its collecting practices had expanded since the 1970s with acquisitions of Louisiana and global cultural material. A vision to relocate the museum collection to enable greater access was born in 1993, and this vision was realized when the museum moved to the Shaw Center for the Arts. LSU MOA has gained 15,000 square feet of exhibition space, bright and spacious administrative offices, quality storage areas for the collection, and common spaces for public programs and community use.
