Cheboygan County Museum Complex
Cheboygan, Michigan
Description

All of the efforts of the society are centered on helping our citizens appreciate and learn from our history so we can build a great present and future for ourselves and descendants.

We have lots of community activities - some of them at the museum, some at other locations. Right now, we are working with our local garden club to create a Victorian planting to complement our Sheriff's Residence and Jail. Our historic log cabin will be outfitted with historically appropriate displays by Log Cabin Day in June 2006.

In 2005, we had the historically certified Sheriff's Residence tuckpointed to preserve the original brick walls. But, there is lots more to be done: the back porch laundry area needs rebuilding, there's a leak in the jail roof, the old basement needs repairs to the water pipes and dehumidifier and some of the rooms need a good painting.

In our Spies Heritage Hall we are researching a hands on approach to some of the exhibits to make them more children friendly. In addition, we are looking into making available a self guided audio tour. Right now, our docents give live tours, but some folks may want to tour at their own pace.

Lots to do, lots of money needed.

History

Since 1969 our society has been working to save and celebrate Cheboygan County history. We have obtained historic certification on our 19th century Sheriff Residence and Jail. In addition we have secured an historic log cabin on which we are seeking certification. In 1997 a 4800 square foot building was dedicated to feature exhibits and provide space for activities.
