The Executive Mansion is the oldest continually occupied governor’s residence built for that purpose in the United States. The Mansion serves as a home for Virginia's Governors, a place for public events and is also open at certain times for visitors. The current residents of the Executive Mansion are Governor Robert F. McDonnell and his family.
n addition to serving as the governor’s home, the Mansion is also a place of business. In its first century, the atmosphere of the first floor was considerably different than it is today. Until the early twentieth century, Virginia governors conducted their daily business from the front room now referred to as “the Old Governor’s Office.” At that time, it was customary for governors to meet with nearly anyone who called; callers awaited their session with the governor seated in chairs in the entrance hall and likely passed their time lounging, talking and spitting tobacco. In 1902, Governor Andrew Jackson Montague was the first to move this daily public business out of the Mansion and into the third floor office at the State Capitol.
A couple times a month, the chef will be posting on the masion website (see link) recipes and pictures from some of our favorite meals prepared by the Mansion’s Executive Chef, Todd. These meals use some of our favorite Virginia products that we encourage you to try! Keep checking back for updated recipes, event tips, and other activities going on at the Mansion.
Tours are available on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m.

The Executive Mansion was built during the War of 1812, which completed the separation of the United States from England, begun during the Revolutionary War.
