Description

This 1770s Tidewater Plantation style house stands on its original foundation and is the birthplace of two Virginia Governors. Costumed interpreters give tours of the seven period furnished rooms, a gift shop is also available.

The Historic Smithfield Museum Store, on the lower level of the main house, is open during visiting hours. The shop carries extraordinary gift items including Virginia products and crafts, colonial toys and games, books, pewter, stoneware, china, and textiles. The shop has products from Virginia Metalcrafters, Williamsburg Pottery, Blenko Glass, authentic toys from Cooperman, Fife & Drum, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, and the Cherokee Indians. It is also a source for pewter Jefferson and Virginia cups. We can special order items from our suppliers.

Historic Smithfield Plantation is a beautiful outdoor venue for your wedding or special event! Built between 1774 and 1776, Smithfield has been restored to its original grandeur. The grounds are big enough to host an event of over 500 people. The house and grounds have been restored to their original state, so your guests will enjoy the atmosphere of this colonial home. But don't worry about Smithfield being "too old" for your present-day needs - our modern conveniences make your special gathering easy to plan. The grounds and garden can be rented to fit your style. Historic Smithfield is an ideal and unique location for weddings, receptions, dinner parties, company picnics, family or class reunions, or any special event that you want to be historic! Treat your party to a journey back in time! For a small fee, costumed interpreters will welcome your guests into Smithfield's 18th century rooms where they can see period furnishings, family portraits, and satisfy their curiosity about the Preston family and life on this frontier plantation.
