John Marshall House
Richmond, Virginia
Description

The home, built by Chief Justice John Marshall in 1790, is an outstanding example of Federal architecture retaining many of its original features. It contains a rich collection of memorabilia and Marshall family objects.

History

The property remained in the Marshall family until 1911 when it was sold to the City of Richmond, but the house was saved from demolition by local preservationists. Visitors to the site can enjoy a guided tour of the house including the remarkable collection of original furnishings, take a stroll through the colorful garden, visit the museum shop, or even try their hand at the game of quoits (John Marshall’s favorite game).
