Step through the gates of Maymont and enter a world of timeless elegance and natural beauty. From 1893 to 1925, it was the home of railroad magnate James Dooley and his wife Sallie. Now a carefully preserved historic landmark, Maymont offers something for everyone - young and old alike.
Tour the Dooleys' opulent residence. Stroll winding walkways with views of panoramic parkland, formal gardens, magnificent century-old trees, and picturesque estate buildings. Visit the Nature Center, outdoor Wildlife Exhibits, and the Children's Farm, and you will understand why Maymont is one of Richmond's most beloved attractions.
Maymont House Museum
The 33-room mansion reflects the lavish lifestyle of American millionaires of the 1890s. Frescoes, Tiffany stained glass, and fine woodwork adorn upstairs interiors, richly appointed with original furnishings including the unique swan bed. Downstairs, the kitchen, pantries, wine cellar, and other restored rooms reveal the story of the domestic staff. It's a fascinating glimpse of two different worlds within one Gilded Age mansion.
Gardens and Parkland
An oasis in the middle of the city, Maymont is one of the most elaborate Victorian landscapes on the East Coast. Experience the terraced, ever-blooming Italian Garden, the Japanese Garden with its 45-foot waterfall, more than 200 specimens of native and exotic trees, the grotto, fountains, gazebos, and much more.
Carriage Collection
In the Carriage House, see a variety of everyday and luxury horse-drawn vehicles. Call in advance to arrange your own private carriage ride.
Animal and Nature Exhibits
From frolicsome lambs at the Children's Farm to playful otters in the Nature Center, animals are part of the fun at Maymont. Outdoor Virginia wildlife exhibits include bears, bison, bobcats, and many others. A 20,000-gallon aquarium and interactive displays in the Nature Center explore the flora and fauna of the nearby James River.
Fun for the Whole Family!
A carriage ride or quick hop on the tram makes your visit fun and easy. Or for an afternoon stroll, follow the gentle paths that meander the grounds. The Visitor Center offers refreshments at the Maymont Café and a variety of unique gifts in the Maymont Shop.
