In response to a challenge from local businessman, Lowell Strickland, the Tuesday Woman's Club founded the South Boston Historical Museum in 1981.
The museum officially opened with a ribbon cutting on July 11, 1982, at 515 Yancey Street in South Boston, Virginia. It remained at this location until the former residence of G. J. Hunt at 801 North Main Street, a larger house, became available through the generosity of Main Street United Methodist Church. This allowed the museum to expand its exhibit and storage areas.
