Explore more than 14,000 years of North Carolina history, from the state's earliest inhabitants through the 20th century. The major exhibition The Story of North Carolina features fascinating artifacts, multimedia presentations, and an interactive format for all ages. Other museum exhibits highlight the state's military history, sports heroes, decorative arts and more. Monthly programs include children's programs, craft demonstrations and family events with things to do for all ages. The Museum Shop, featuring North Carolina crafts, and the on-site restaurant Pharaoh?s @ the Museum are open daily.

Mission

The Division of State History Museums collects and preserves artifacts and other historical materials relating to the history and heritage of North Carolina in a local, regional, national, and international context to assist people in understanding how the past influences the present. The Division interprets the state?s history through exhibitions, educational programs, and publications available to the visitor on-site or through distance-learning technologies.

History

The museum was founded in 1902.

Artifact Collections

The collection of the North Carolina Museum of History comprises more than 150,000 artifacts representing six centuries. It encompasses a broad range of objects that help interpret the state's rich history.

Research Collections

The artifact collection is available for research upon appointment.

Programs

Guided tours, hands-on museum classroom programs, lecture series, traditional music performances, festivals,hands-on History-in-a-Box kits for classrooms, online workshops for teachers, interactive distance-learning classes, resources on museum's website at ncmuseumofhistory.org. Tar Heel Junior Historian Association is based at museum. Teacher Resource Guide are available on museum's website. Docent program. Most programs are free, but some have a minimal fee. Costs of educational materials, such as History-in-a-Box kits and distance-learning classes, are available on museum's website. See website for more educational programs and offerings.
