"NEW" MUSEUM in 2012; The Museum of Discovery was awarded a grant of $9.2 million by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation! The grant will enable the Museum to construct a street-level entrance on President Clinton Avenue and to redesign the exhibit areas, including three new galleries. The Museum will be open the entire year of 2010 and part of 2011.

The Museum of Discovery is Little Rock's oldest museum, one of science, history, and technology. We're primarily a hands-on museum for all ages and have a wide variety of exhibits and programs to interest a broad range of visitors. You don't have to be a child, have a child, or even accompany one to have fun while you learn at the Museum of Discovery. MOD develops and rents our own traveling exhibits as well as leasing them for our own institution, so something is always changing at the Museum!
The Museum of Discovery, Little Rock's oldest museum, was founded in 1927 as the Museum of Natural History and Antiquities by Bernie Babcock, a local author and community activist. Ms. Babcock "gave" the Museum to the City of Little Rock as a Christmas present in 1929. Through various name changes, incorporation, and Accreditation by the American Association of Museums, MOD is today a museum of science, history, and technology with a hands-on environment.
The Museum of Discovery holds approximately 14,000 artifacts in their permanent collections relating to science, history, and technology. Specific areas include Mexican masks, kewpie collectibles, Native American artifacts, and multicultural items. The Museum also has live animals used for programming purposes.
The Museum of Discovery has an extensive collection of taxidermy study mounts as well as preserved herpetological specimens.
MOD offers a large catalogue of educator-guided programs in the areas of science, history, and technology. We host traveling as well as permanent exhibits and educational special events throughout the year. Overnight Camp-ins are also scheduled on a regular basis. Outreach education includes live animal programs at off-site locations such as schools. Fees for various programs and services may be obtained by contacting the Museum's Reservationist at 501-396-7050 ext. 111.
