Description

Our museum, located in downtown New Franklin, serves as a vital repository of local history for Franklin, New Franklin, Howard County, the Santa Fe Trail and MKT Railway. We store and maintain archival records used for genealogy research, as well as creating interactive exhibits for visitors. We strive to educate the public about the origins, economic importance, and impact this area had on westward expansion.

Mission

Our mission is to tell the stories of those who used the trail, sharing their trials and tribulations with current and future generations.

History

South Howard County Historical Society was founded in 1989 by community members dedicated to recording and preserving local history.

Artifact Collections

We have a Conestoga wagon built from blueprints obtained from the Smithsonian Institute, a working barn loom, and train memorabilia from the MKT Railway. Displays about early life including axes, awls, anvils, art depicting pioneer life, displays about school houses, churches. Information about William Becknell and the start of the Santa Fe Trail and its impact on westward expansion. Civil war items, including maps of where battles occurred and articles about the battles. Information about local native Americans and a large collection of arrowheads.

Research Collections

We have research on the Santa Fe Trail, the MKT, Boonslick area where Daniel Boone's sons had salt production, forts in the area. genealogy, obituaries, and more.

Programs

We provide 4 educational programs each year to the public. This last year we had a grandson of a member who presented his grandfather's memoirs of his experience during WWII including being on Omaha beach on D-Day. One member presented edible mushrooms of Missouri with a taste testing. The State Historic Society of Missouri presented photos of a local mailman who took photos of people on his route during the 50s, a book of his work is available. We have visited and toured a local century farm that has a Spanish land grant marker. No fees are charged for programs, and materials on site can be copied on site for use.

We are governed by an elected board of directors including a president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer and two additional board members.
