Throughout construction, the Museum will remain open. Visitor entry and all parking will be to the north of the Museum, off Fine Arts Drive.
The Museum remains open and continues to host, organize, and circulate temporary exhibitions while construction is underway. In preparation for the expansion, several galleries have been closed and highlights of the Museum's collection have been reinstalled. A temporary Museum Shop is located on the Main Level in Galleries 210 and 211. A temporary cafe is located adjacent to the Shop in Gallery 213.
The Saint Louis Art Museum has made remarkable and significant progress on its first major expansion in a generation. Since breaking ground on January 19, 2010, notable progress has been made both outside and inside the Museum. The new underground parking garage has been enclosed by concrete walls, with two levels of garage floor completed. Construction of the new Grand Stair is underway, which when complete, will link Sculpture Hall with a new Level 1 Concourse and provide a clear connection to galleries, a new café, and the parking garage as well as the South Building Education Center and Auditorium.

The Saint Louis Art Museum’s building was designed by renowned American architect Cass Gilbert for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, also known as the World’s Fair. Originally part of the Palace of Fine Arts, the Museum was the only building from the Fair designed to be a permanent structure, the "one material monument of the Exposition." It stands as a reminder of that defining event in the history of the city of St. Louis and the State of Missouri.
The Saint Louis Art Museum is one of the nation's leading comprehensive art museums with collections that include works of art of exceptional quality from virtually every culture and time period. Areas of notable depth include Oceanic art, pre-Columbian art, ancient Chinese bronzes, and European and American art of the late 19th and 20th centuries, with particular strength in 20th-century German art.
