Description

Largest antique radio museum in the U.S., with 10,000 square feet of display area, and a collection valued at over 1.5 million dollars.

Mission

To preserve early electronic devices, particulary radios, and to promote knowledge of how they influenced, and how their asthetic design was influenced by, other elements of society

History

The Museum of Radio and Technology opened to the public in 1991. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and a member of the West Virginia Association of Museums. We have had had visitors from all U.S. states, and over thirty foreign countries.

Artifact Collections

Four hundred antique radios, Edison and Victrola phonographs, RCA TV camera demonstrated at 1939 World's Fair, William Wrigley (chewing gum maker) radio that cost $895.00 in 1927, radio donated by Grote Reber, who built the first radiotelescope dish, 1949 RCA projection TV, A.C. Gilbert toys, early radio and TV related advertising, telegraph items, military radios, dress made and worn by singer Molly O'Day, rare and beautiful Polyphon disc music box made circa 1896

Research Collections

Large technical and electronic library, including bound volumes of Electrical World magazine 1896-1935. These magazines featured articles about, and by, notables such as Edison, Tesla, Steinmetz, etc

Educational Programs

We occasionally offer training in radio repair. We welcome school tours ( in May we have 40 students from the Putnam County WV Schools gifted children program )

Facilities

The building is a former school, the original part of the building was built in the 1920's, and additions were added in the 1950's and 1970's. We have made many many improvements to the building via grants from the county, and the West Virginia Legislative Digest.

Newsletter is mailed to membership. About 125 copies are mailed monthly. Minutes of board meetings are posted at the museum.
