Description

This stately Greek Revival mansion was built for Benjamin Harvey Hill, a U.S. Senator and acclaimed orator.

Rooms may also be rented for meetings and parties of up to 200 people.

Furnished in period antiques and some reproductions, Bellevue provides a lovely backdrop to weddings and receptions. Tall columns grace three sides of this Greek Revival house. Original heart pine floors and beautifully carved pediments are among the treats to see. Two parlors connected by large working pocket doors are kept unfurnished to make room for meetings and parties.

History

This National Landmark Mansion was completed in 1855 as the home of Georgia orator and statesman Benjamin Harvey Hill and his wife Caroline Holt Hill. Hill was arrested at Bellevue along with Secretary of the Confederate Navy Stephen Mallory in May 1865, but returned home after a few months. The house was sold in 1869 to Judge Jesse McClendon and remained in that family until the late 1930s. It was purchased by the Fuller E. Callaway Foundation and deeded to the LaGrange Woman's Club, which continues to oversee its preservation and use.

Artifact Collections

One of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the state. The exterior features ionic columns across wide porticos. Inside, massive carved wood cornices grace the doors and windows, while black Italian marble mantles and plaster ceiling medallions enchant all who visit. Upstairs, a half-tester bed and a collection of period pieces and family mementos are on display. The home is furnished in the style of the 1850's. Shown here are the portraits on display of Senator Hill and Mrs. Hill.
