Description

Visitors see an award-winning film about the Southeastern Indians and the Hall of the Ancients depicts 12,000 years of Native American life through artifacts, dioramas, and interactive computer programs. The story of the Trail of Tears is shown in a 4-minute film and maps. Also on display is an extensive collection of contemporary Native American artwork, including paintings, baskets, sculpture and pottery. A unique collection featuring tools from more than 100 crafts is displayed in the Sellars Gallery of Historic Tools. In the Appalachian Settlement, pioneer log cabins, a blacksmith shop and farm buildings tell the story of Georgia's early residents. Adults and children both enjoy our Nature Trail featuring many species of native plants.

Mission

The mission of the Funk Heritage Center is to tell the story of the early Appalachian Settlers and Southeastern Indians through educational programming and the collection, care and exhibition of art and artifacts.

History

The museum opened in 1999. In 2005, it was designated as "Georgia's Official Frontier and Southeastern Indian Interpretive Center".

Artifact Collections

The Bennett History Museum has a large collection of artifacts representing the American Indian cultures that preceded the European arrival in the Southeastern U.S. Projectile points, atalatyl weights, chunky stones and pottery shards are among the cultural remains of ancient cultures. In the Longhouse are artifacts and text panels telling the story 'Of Sky and Earth,' a narrative of the earliest encounters between Europeans and the peoples of the Southeast with accompanying artifacts. An 11 foot by 5 foot petroglyph is the centerpiece of our artifact collection.

Educational Programs

Docents provide guided tours for school field trips and for adults. We offer specialized teacher workshops and each October, an annual Georgia History Timeline program for students second through eighth grade. We have a monthly book club and various lectures during the year.

Publications

We publish a newsletter three times a year and a special educator's newsletter each August.
