Historical Museum

Our museum offers guests the opportunity to explore artifacts, old photographs, and a circa 1950's caboose to view life as it was in the early days of the Kishwaukee Valley.

Mission

The purpose of the Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Society shall be charitable and educational in order to bring together those people interested in history, especially in the history of our communities-Genoa, Kingston, and Mayfield Townships. Understanding the history of our communities is basic to our democratic way of life, gives us a better understanding of our communities, and helps us better appreciate our American heritage.

History

Established in 1977 by Robert Hoover and many local folks. Milwaukee Rail Road Depot was moved to the 2 acre site on Route 72 followed by a Illinois Central caboose. The oldest Genoa well building is on the museum campus.

Artifact Collections

Farming tools, kitchen, bedroom,parlor,dry goods store's equipment, children toys from 1890s and newer. Oldest hearse in DeKalb county, 1923 Overland convertible automobile, blacksmith tools, large collection of pictures from 1890s to 1960s of Genoa and Kingston. Many railroad tools, schedules,and equipment. Collection of Leich Electric telephones, spark plugs, and telephone related equipment.

Research Collections

Local genealogy of Kingston, Genoa, Kirkland, and rural communities, Leich Electric, 1912 Insurance map, High school year books for Genoa, Kingston, and Kirkland. Genealogy and obituaries of many local families of Genoa, Kingston, and surrounding rural areas.

Educational Programs

Tours are given upon request.

Annual presentations for 6th grade classes for Genoa-Kingston students.

Facilities

Depot from 1854, Water Works Building from early 1900s, and Caboose from mid 1950s.

Governance

All volunteer organization with board of directors.
