The Dorband-Howe House Museum is the repository for Homewood's history. Museum hours are Tuesdays and Saturdays, 1:00-3:00 p.m.

History

Built in 1891 from Homewood Brickyard bricks, the Dorband-Howe House still stands as a reminder of Homewood's history. Come and see our 5000 inventoried items; 1200 photos in hard and digital form; real estate records, phone books, photos, yearbooks, and church records. Some limited family files are also available.

Artifact Collections

The Homewood Historical Society is a repository of Homewood's heritage for generations to come. Our library holds a growing collection of books, newspapers, newspaper clippings, and other printed materials that are available for research on a variety of topics relating to Homewood history.

For the genealogist, our library contains a collection of alphabetized obituaries, a collection of telephone directories dating from the 1920's, and copies of selected church records that often prove helpful in family research. For students and those interested in general research, the Society maintains files on Homewood churches, schools, businesses, governmental operations, and a host of other topics and organizations that can be accessed to assist in completing research.

Meetings

Meetings are held at the Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, Homewood, Illinois 60430 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM (except June, July, and August). Meetings are free and open to the public.

Library

The Society's library also maintains publications and guidelines that are available to aid homeowners in efforts to restore their old homes.

Join us in Milledgeville, Georgia, for the annual Georgia Association of Museums conference as we explore the profound wisdom of Milledgeville author Flannery O'Connor’s words. In a world where narratives intersect and perspectives diverge, this theme invites proposals that delve into the essence of storytelling within museums and cultural institutions. Our work in the museum field requires us to look at stories from as many angles and perspectives as possible so that we might do our best to tell the “whole story.

Through thought-provoking discussions, interactive workshops, and engaging presentations, we will uncover the layers of meaning embedded within every artifact, exhibition, and historical account. Just as O’Connor masterfully crafted narratives that resonate with universal truths, museums hold the power to illuminate the whole story behind many objects, artworks, and cultural phenomena

We will examine how museums can embrace inclusivity, diversity, and authenticity in their storytelling practices. By acknowledging multiple perspectives and amplifying marginalized voices, we can enrich our understanding of the past and present, fostering empathy and connection within our communities.
