Description

Our society's emphasis is geographically the coun-ties of McLean, Livingston, Ford & Woodford. The cemeteries of each were canvassed, recorded, and many old stones were photographed. We are con-stantly adding to our collection of obituaries as we find them to further one's research. The census for each county (thru 1930) is available for viewing, on microfilm and/or transcribed copies. Area weekly newspapers (not all years) are also available on microfilm - AND MORE. History

One of the earliest "genealogy" societies in the state, it was founded in 1965 by Verda Gerwick, who recently passed away in 2003. She had a vision that people would be interested in finding out about their ancestors. So, she organized a group of dedicated men and women to canvass the local area for cemeteries. A self taught researcher, she shared her experiences with others who were also interest-ed in genealogy. This was years before Alex Haley wrote his book and the mini-series "Roots" became famous. Over the many years this library has reach-ed countless people across the USA as we respond to their research requests. Th "Fort," as the society is locally know, welcomes the public to explore our facility and search for your ancestor's central Illinois connections
