Description

The Rising Sun Inn is a rare surviving example of pre-Revolutionary planter's framed-house built circa 1753 and was established as a tavern in 1785. Located on the famed Washington Rochambeau Revolutionary route, the Inn is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Mission

The Friends of the Rising Sun Inn's mission is to restore, preserve, maintain, and promote the Rising Sun Inn and property as an historical site and museum as well as to provide educational programs to engage the public to explore the people and cultures of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The Friends place particular emphasis on the Baldwin family, as the original owners of the Inn and their service in the American Revolution, as well as the Inn's other owners and residents, and the Inn?s role in Anne Arundel County history.

Artifact Collections

The Rising Sun Inn Museum includes decorative arts made or used in this country prior to 1859. As the Rising Sun Inn was both a farmhouse and tavern, the collection focuses on pieces related to both home life and the tavern business. The current collection includes furniture, silver, pewterware, ceramics, and glass. Family documents and inventories have been carefully examined to furnish the house appropriately; work continues to be done identifying and authenticating provenance of historic artifacts associated with the Inn.

Educational Programs

The education programs provided at the museum include historical exhibits and guided docent tours.

Services
Rising Sun Inn History Tour

From our 18th century Tap Room, complete with original built-in cupboards to hold the Tavern's keg and tankards, to an original "Walking" spinning wheel, to a wonderful doll house replica of the historic Jonas Green House in Annapolis, a guided tour of the Rising Sun Inn allows you to step back in time and consider a slice of colonial life in America. Docents will happily share their knowledge of the Inn and answer questions on your tour, helping you understand all that the Inn has done to enrich our past and inform our present. Original wood flooring from 1753, beautiful 18th and 19th century furniture, even a fragment of homespun cloth found in the original walls, all help to illustrate the lives of an American Patriot, Henry Baldwin, his family and compatriots during the Revolutionary War. Make history come alive with this unique tour!

Architectural Tour

The Rising Sun Inn is historically significant in many ways, not the least of which is its unique structure. From March-November, weather permitting, we offer an Architectural Tour for visitors to learn more about the exterior of the Inn. This tour focuses on 18th century building methods and materials, the usefulness of the Central Hall design, and incorporation of New England Colonial features. The Rising Sun Inn is one of the few surviving colonial, framed-structures in Maryland to feature header bond brickwork in its construction, with the entire foundation resting upon English bond brickwork. A recent archaeological dig on the property has revealed more secrets of the Inn as well. While on the tour you'll learn about Generals Washington and Rochambeau, whose troops marched along the road in front of the Inn which now bears their name (Generals Highway). Of course, the big question at the Rising Sun Inn is: "Did George Washington sleep here?" What do you think the answer is? We think perhaps only the 300 year old English boxwood's gracing this beautiful property can tell...

Tea & a Tour at the Rising Sun Inn

The Rising Sun Inn offers the opportunity for a lovely respite; time to gather together a small group of family or friends and break from the busy hustle-bustle of life with a tea party! Groups from 8-12 participants are welcome to reserve the Rising Sun Inn to celebrate life’s events: birthdays, wedding and baby showers, promotion, retirement, graduations, or just because! Tea time took place in colonial America and was held dear because of the high import costs of tea, coffee and chocolate. The Rising Sun Inn has a collection of colonial tea serving pieces, as well as a traditional tea caddy, which was kept locked by the lady of the house. Learn this and more on a lovely guided tour following your tea! Our Tea and Tour Program is for groups with 8 – 12 participants. Participants can either enjoy an Elevenses or an Afternoon Tea. Elevenses? What's that, you ask. Elevenses are a more casual, lighter affair with tea and sweets, while Afternoon Teas include finger sandwiches in addition to tea and sweets. After enjoying tea time, guests will tour the Rising Sun Inn learning about its history and its role in Anne Arundel County History.
