The Amon Carter Museum of American Art houses some 250,000 objects. Its collection includes works by the earliest artist-explorers to venture west into the Rocky Mountains and beyond; extensive holdings of early American modernism; one of the largest collections of work by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell, the two greatest artists of the American West; and one of the nation's great holdings of photography, from the earliest days of the medium to the present.
The Amon Carter Museum of American Art was established through the generosity of Amon G. Carter (1879-1955) to house his collection of paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell; to collect, preserve, and the exhibit the finest examples of American art; and to serve an educational role through exhibitions, publications, and programs devoted to the study of American art.
In 1961, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art opened to house the collection of paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell acquired by Fort Worth publisher and philanthropist Amon G. Carter (1879-1955). Since its inception, the museum has broadened the scope of its collection by adding works of 19th- and 20th-century American art. The museum houses collections of paintings, sculpture, and prints, as well as one of the foremost collections of American photographs. Since its opening, the museum has published nearly 200 books, both independently and in conjunction with major publishers.

The museum's library and archives offer more than 100,000 interdisciplinary materials covering the early 19th century through the present day. The collections emphasize the museum's art collecting and exhibition program, with particular strengths in the art of the American West and the history of North American western expansion.
