History

The Boerne Area Historical Preservation Society (BAHPS) was organized on June 9, 1970. The purpose of the BAHPS is to educate through preserving and encouraging the preservation of the natural beauty of the community, historical buildings, objects, and places. The BAHPS strives to keep legible the history of the Boerne area so that the knowledge of the rich, inherited community values may be more appreciated and not lost.

As a non-profit organization, the Society subsists on dues, donation, memorials, and fundraisers to accomplish its goals. Since 1991, historical research and genealogical information maintained by the BAHPS has been housed at the Boerne Public Library, Historical Research Room. The Historical Kuhlmann/King House and Graham Building are open on weekends and by appointment only.

The Kuhlmann/King House was opened to the public on June 17, 1972, during Bergesfest. BAHPS-sponsored events include Charter Day initiated in 1974 (discontinued in 1981 because of so many competitive events on the same day), the pre-Lent German Maskenball with historical costumes (started in 1978), the Awards Luncheon (begun in 1981 to honor people for notable historical preservation efforts), and the First Annual Boerne Historical Tour (begun in 1982).

In January 1983, the Kuhlmann/King House was closed for restoration work which was completed by May 1, 1983. All of the furniture was removed; floors were renovated; gutters, drains, and shutters were added; and the Cibolo Creek rock fireplace was rebuilt.

In 1987, the Graham Building was awarded a Texas Historical (Subject) Marker from the Texas Historical Commission. It currently houses the Archives and the office of the Society.

The archives has grown from one filing cabinet in a small room in the historical house to a full room in the Graham Building.
