History

The present El Paso Museum of Art came to being in 1961 with the gift of the Samuel H. Kress Collection of European Art. The Museum is governed by the City of El Paso with a city-appointed advisory board. Previously, the Museum was housed in the W.W. Turney residence. In 1998, the Museum moved to a new location in the Cultural Arts District in the heart of downtown El Paso, next to the city's Convention Center and Abraham Chavez Theatre. The new facility more than triples the previous exhibition, education, and operations space, and includes five galleries, offices, an auditorium, library, 3 studio classrooms, and museum store.

Artifact Collections

EPMA has over 5,000 works of art that include 13th- to 18th-century European art; 17th - 19th century Mexican colonial art; 19th- and 20th-century American art; and a large collection of works of art on paper and contemporary art from the Southwestern U.S. and Mexico.

Kress Collection of European Art: Tone of the Southwest's finest gatherings of European art, this collection features works in the Italian, French, and Spanish schools. Artists include Lorenzo Lotto, Lavinia Fontana, Artemesia Gentileschi, Bernardo Strozzi, Bernardo Bellotto, Canaletto and Francisco Zurbaran.

Spanish Viceroyal art (17th-19th century): This collection contains over 60 paintings on canvas, board, and copper by Nicolas Enriquez, Antonnio de Torres, Francisco Martinez and Juan Sanchez Salmaron, among other Mexican retablos ( 19th-20th century): and New Mexico and Colorado bultos.

American paintings (19th century-present): this collection represents American Impressionism, early American portraiture, Social Realism, and Regionalism. The Museum also features a gallery dovoted to the work of Tom Lea and other artiswts associated with the American West. Artists include Mary Doyle, Gilbert Sturart, Rembrandt Peale, George Inness, Robert Henri, Jospeh Henry Sharp, E. Irving Couse, John Sloan, Moses Soyer, John H. Twachtman, and Henriette Wyeth. Works on Paper ( European, American, Mexican 16th-20th century): Include examples by Romare Bearden, Benton, Cezanne, William Merritt Chase, Albrecht Durer, John Marin, Federic Remington, Piranesi, Andrew Wyeth.

Archives of EPMA's institutional history an collections are open to researchers by appointment only.

Educational Programs

EPMA produces over 150 public programs each year. Educational programs focus on Museum collections and exhibitions and on the diverse culture of El Paso/Juarez, the largest urban border population in the world. The Museum has hosted programs ranging from "Low Rider" car parades to classical music concerts.

Gallery talks and tours by docents,artist, staff and art historians; lectures by artists and art historians; docent and student docent programs; studio classes for all ages;adult/family self-guided tours and gallery activities; family days; Educator Evenings and teacher newsletter; film and video series in English and Spanish; concerts and performances; music education lectures; literary readings; outdoor festivals and parades.

The Museum has successfully used educational outreach as a means of making the Museum relevant to the culturally diverse community of El Paso. The education staff is eager to consult with colleagues.
