The Michelson Museum of Art was established in 1985 when Mrs. Janine Michelson of New York City and Paris, France, selected Marshall as the permanent home for her late artist husband's work. Her selection of Marshall was prompted by a suggestion from Wendy Russell Reves, a Marshall native and friend of the Michelsons.
In January 1985, a group of interested citizens visited Mrs. Michelson in New York and accepted her gift of the collection. After finding a suitable temporary home and raising the necessary money with a membership drive, the museum opened its doors in May 1985.
The museum's first home was in a lovely space provided by a law firm. In April 1990, the museum moved to its present location on the first floor of the Southwestern Bell Telephone Building in downtown Marshall. The architectural firm of John Flowers & Associates adapted the space to include two exhibit galleries, auditorium, kitchen, offices, classroom, Discovery Room, and work areas.
The main purpose of the museum is the exhibition and preservation of the permanent collection. The secondary but equally important purpose is education. This is done through exhibitions from the permanent collection and special exhibits, lectures and docent-led tours, video presentations, Discovery Room, classes, and workshops.
Works of Leo Michelson (1887-1978), Russian (Latvian)/American). The permanent
collection contains over 1,000 paintings, drawings, and prints spanning 70 years of the artistic career of Leo Michelson. His early career was influenced by old Russian Art and German and French Impressionism. He was categorized as Paris School, but developed a style and concept that was as advanced and imaginative as any of the greatly acclaimed experiments of his time.

Collaborate with school system to offer teacher workshops; docent/trustee education for traveling exhibitions. Ongoing permanent collection written guide for educators for traveling exhibit and permanent collection (in process of being rewritten). Gallery tour upon request. Pay printing costs when borrowing educational material.
