Museum of the Plains of Perryton is an encyclopedic history museum dedicated to preserving, conserving, and educating. The community of Perryton was formed in 1919 with the merging of two smaller pioneer villages that had been by passed by the railroad. This unique history provides numerous opportunities for the Museum to delve into two vibrant historical stories. The Museum has four late 18th Century and early 20th Century original structures on site, three of which came from those two pioneer villages. Our long term plan includes a docent training program enabling the museum to conduct period tours in period costumes focusing on our "Victorian Mainstreet." Museum of the Plains is also concentrating on expanding our elementary school educational outreach program. Museum of the Plains is also working toward expanding our art collection.
Museum of the Plains began on the third floor of the Ochiltree County Courthouse in 1975. In 1978 the Museum was gifted 3 acres of land and moved into the first of our historical structures, an 1898 Santa Fe Depot in 1979. Since then the Museum has acquired another 1 1/2 acres of land and added 3 more historic structures. A main building housing our Fine Arts exhibits was added in 1980. Since 1980, an Archeology & Paleontology wing, a community room, and our Great Hall have been added bringing our total square footage to approx. 34,000 square feet. Our most recent acquisition, a Victorian period church, was added to the Museum grounds in July of 2003 and was the last original structure of Gray, Oklahoma, a pioneer village that moved to the railroad becoming a part of the new townsite of Perryton.
Museum of the Plains houses 10,000+ artifacts chronicling the history of our area and region. Among the Museum's collection are artifacts of the Buried City, a pre-Columbian site located in Ochiltree County.
Museum of the Plains has an educational outreach program designed for elementary school age children. The Museum has designed historically accurate traveling trunk programs based on the Native American tribes who once lived in our area. A second trunk program based on the coming of the early settlers will be ready by spring.
