Railroad & Heritage Museum
Temple, Texas
History

Chartered in 1973 as an educational, non-profit organization, the museum works to encourage public participation in preserving local history and especially railroad history. The museum is housed in the restored Temple Santa Fe depot, dating from 1911.

Artifact Collections

Railroad artifacts of 1880-1950s, approximately 75,000 artifacts. The museum's collection is one of the most outstanding holdings in Central Texas. The collection includes items relating to all aspects of railroading in the Southwest. Steam Locomotive, 3 cabooses, 1 boxcar, 1 WWII Troop Sleeper, Baldwin switcher, Amtrak sleeper, GP series diesel. Off-site: MKT Depot.

Research Collections

Railroad timetables, photos, local history documents; available for research. Santa Fe RR Engineer tracings for Texas 1900-1968.

Programs

General tour; special interest tours; in-class demonstrations using travelling trunks. The educational program has won state award for excellence from the Texas Historical Commission in 1992. The museum continues to share history or railroading with both local and out-of-town visitors.
