Description

UPDATE: Following a lengthy tenure in Sugar Land, Texas, the Museum of Southern History, is relocating to the campus of Houston Baptist University in the summer of 2007, joining the Bible in America Museum and Museum of Decorative Arts and Architecture in the new Joella & Stewart Morris Cultural Arts Center. Maps and directions from Highway 59-S to that site may be obtained through the university web (www.hbu.edu), or by calling 281-649-3000.

History

Incorporated as the Confederate History Museum in 1978 in Richmond, Texas, and operating under that name at several locations until 1997, when its name was changed as it moved to a new facility in nearby Sugar Land. In October, '02, it once again relocated to a larger facility (patterned after Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest. This impressive new structure houses the permanent exhibits on the upper floor and incorporates a rotating exhibit's gallery on the lower floor. An original sharecropper's home from Ft. Bend County is situated on the grounds and examines the difficult life of the late nineteenth century system known by that name.

Artifact Collections

Predominantly, the collections focus on southern history subjects, currently ranging from the American Revolutionary War period to early 20th century. Through the use of maps, text and artifacts we examine the early Colonial era, Louisana Purchase, settlement of the old southwest, Texas Independence, War with Mexico, Civil War, Reconstruction, Cattle Industry, and Progressive Era subjects. Furnishings, bric-a-brac, clothing, firearms, tools, and transportation devices assist our telling a compelling story of the Old South and its gradual expansion into south Texas. Even how movies, reenactments and other venues have helped qualify what the south was, and is, highlight the many contributions southerners have made to the national, and international arena.

Research Collections

Extensive library for in-house use only.have an extensive collection of newspapers, periodicals and bound volumes, both primary and secondary in nature, that examine southern issues; with a major emphasis on the American Civil War. We have recently initiated a Rice University sponsored program that will annually furnish two advanced undergraduates or graduate school students to work with matters pertaining to collections processing, exhibit preparation/design, and archival preservation of our library holdings as well as our three-dimensional objects. We recently acquired the Past Perfect Software system for artifact processing and have established a metal shelving/holding system for objects. The acquisition of conservation supplies has been a long-needed step to gaining control on what we have and will be useful in soliciting new collections.

Educational Programs
