On an August day in 1986 as some Pampa Army Air field people were talking, Marvin Ray from Rossburg, Ohio, suggested they might establish a museum. An old pump station built in the late 1930s was already a historical building and was in need of tender loving care. The city approved and called for architectural drawings.
Chuck Dempsey started the Pampa Army Air field Museum with a gift of Wilbur and
Orville Wright artifacts. A merger was accomplished with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and funds were raised. Southwest Industries got the contract and built the building. After eight long years, the doors were opened on August 20, 1994.
In March 1995, Mike Parker, President of the B-25 Preservation Group, was able to get a lead on a B-25 Bomber for the museum from Quantico, Virginia. It was added to the collection.
The museum does not have items properly accessioned or defined yet. A U. S. military
museum, the collections span the Revolutionary War to the O Grady incident.
Gallery tours; school tours are available on special request. The museum works with area schools in hopes that today s students will be better informed.
