Description

The U.S. Army Medical Department (AMEDD) Museum tells the story of Army medicine from 1775 to the present. Our collections cover uniforms, equipment, vehicles and art relating to the history of the Medical Department. Military medicine has contributed greatly to medical science over the years. In time of war, its role is to conserve life, not take it. In other words, our story is about the humanitarian side of military life. How disease has changed the course of history and how military medicine has fought against it. We also have a significant collection of medical prisoners of war material. Of particular interest is a 1953 hospital train ambulance car which, along with Civil War scale models, tells the story of rail evacuation for the 90 years it was the main means of mass transportation.

History

The AMEDD Museum began at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, with the Medical Field Service School (MFSS). The original Army Medical Museum established as a pathology collection during the Civil War is still in Washington at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Our museum moved to Texas with the MFSS in 1946. We were designated the Army Medical Museum in 1955 when the original became the tri-service Armed Forces Institute of Pathology Museum. In 1973, the MFSS was moved into the new Academy of Health Sciences, leaving the Museum behind. Our Foundation was incorporated in 1978 to build a new museum facility. Phase I construction was completed in 1989. Phase II doubled the size of the Museum to 34,000 square feet in 1998 and added outdoor exhibit areas besides. The third and final phase of construction was completed in 2001, adding 6,500 square feet of Foundation office and conservation space and landscaped garden. Accredited by the American Association of Museums
