Description

The Republic of Texas Museum located at DRT Headquarters in Austin, houses many artifacts from the Republic of Texas era. The address for The Republic of Texas Museum is 510 East Anderson, near the intersection of I-35 North and Hwy 183.

History

The future goals of the institution are to develop exhibits that portray the diversity and contributions of Texans of all backgrounds.

Institutional History: The Republic of Texas Museum was created by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Inc. shortly after the organization was founded in 1891.

The Museum was located in one room of the east wing of the State Capitol in 1903. In 1917 the Museum moved to the old General Land Office on the Capitol grounds.

The Daughters of the Republic of Texas purchased the new museum building in 1991 on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the organization. The new Republic of Texas Museum building opened its doors to the public exactly one year later.

The mission of the Republic Museum is to preserve the heritage of the Republic of Texas historic period and to educate the public about the history and culture of that time.

Artifact Collections

The museum has a collection of approximately 3,000 items. The collection's focus is on Republic-era Texas. However, the museum has items from 19th Century Texas to today. The museum has approximately 200 photographs and a great deal of institutional historical archives.

Research Collections

The museum has approximately 200 photographs and a great deal of institutional historical archives, but little archives of general interest.

Educational Programs

The museum provides tours to visitors of its exhibits. These tours specifically focus in Texas history and Texas lifeways. The museum also considers the nature of heroism and the staying power of heroes. Occasionally, we offer lectures, musical programs, and guided tours. Educational material is not always available for all programming. Students and all visitors are offered a scavenger hunt on field trips.
