Description

Kell House Museum is the only historic house museum in the county, but still many area residents are unaware of its existance and/or have never visited. Increased awareness is a priority and to this end we have instituted a home-page on the web and published new brochures. Another concern is lack of volunteers and so recruitment is a constant problem. Upcoming projects include two temporary exhibits yearly and two lecture in conjunction with exhibits.

History

The Kell House was purchased from a daughter of Frank kell in December of 1980. Kell House had been continuously occupied by the Kell family since its contructin in 1908-1909 until its purchase by the Wichita County Heritage Society. In 1981, a major fund-raising drive was undertaken soliciting funds from the community as well as a matching grant from the Texas Historical Commission. Additional funds raised, along with donations from the 3 remaining Kell children, were used to purchase the original Kell furnishings which remain in the house. Today, Kell House is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and bears both Texas state and local landmark designation.
