Description

The Heard-Craig Historic Center consists of a 7,000 sq. ft. historic home and carriage house built in 1900. The home contains breathtaking stained glass, original furnishings, personal belongings, family heirlooms, and art collected by the Heard and Craig families.

The Heard family was instrumental in the early development of the city of McKinney. Tours at the center tell the story of a fascinating family dedicated to their community and each other.

A Victorian Christmas special event will open on November 23 - 25, 2001 and will include decorations in every room of the home. Docents in costume will tell of the traditions of Victorian Christmas as visitors tour the site. Father Christmas will pose for photos with children as carolers and musicians provide music. The home will remain decorated through December and may be toured during regular tour hours.

We also sponsor an historic evening lecture series and an afternoon lecture series, Tea & Conversation.

History

The Heard-Craig Center was formed in 1971 upon the death of Kathryn Heard Craig. Mrs. Craig established a trust to care for her family home so that it could serve as a meeting place for Women's Clubs. She was born in the 1884 and grew up during a time when few women had the opportunity to receive higher education. The women of the time furthered their education through women's clubs where history, art, music, science and other cultures were studied. Though Mrs. Craig received a college education, it was always important to her that the women's club continue so that their tradition of education would be preserved.

Since 1971, the Heard-Craig Historic Center has allowed the local clubs to meet at no charge. The clubs now have men in their membership so the original name of the Heard-Craig Woman's Club Trust has been changed to reflect the times.
