History

West Bay Common School No. 13 was built in Chambers County Texas. This 18 by 30 foot structure, made of cypress wood, originally had a shingle roof. Half of this shingle roof remains under the present metal roof that was added after the 1900 hurricane. The building was used as a school until 1936. It was then moved a short distance and made into a three-room house. With the efforts of the League City Historical Society, this one-room school was moved to League City in December of 1992 to the corner of Kansas and Second Street, the former site of the Little Green Schoolhouse. Once restored, this little schoolhouse was formally dedicated as the West Bay Common School Children's Museum on October 21, 1993. The purpose of the museum is to preserve a historical site of the former Little Green Schoolhouse; to preserve an early Texas schoolhouse along with early school memorabilia and to provide a "Hands-On-History' experience for children of all ages.

The Salmon Ice House, was added to the property in 1994. This structure was originally located one block west on Second Street and also was moved for restoration and preservation of one of League City's early businesses. This 1920's building served ice to all of League City, Kemah, Seabrook and Webster, Texas. Later, part of the building was made into Barber Shop. "Ghost" like figures were added to electronically tell the story of League City's history. These figures were made from men born in League City and all except the child have passed on at this time. Situated toward the back of this wood fenced lot is a 40 x 40 foot concrete structure built in the 30's for the original fire station and later was used by the local school system as their bus barn to house 3 school busses. That local school system now has over 300 school busses. The front of this building has been covered in barn wood from a local barn, the Barger Barn. The barn doors from this same barn along with other farm artifacts are on exhibit inside the building with additional League City memorabilia and artifacts depicting early life in this once small cattle and farm community. This building is used to support the schoolhouse experience with the outside program of lessons about out-houses, games of the 1890's, lunches, the well pump and a history of the land and building. The Historical Society has a research room for its collection of local history and a small gift shop.
