Description

Currently the Museum is expanding with an additional storage area. We recently refreashed our cactus garden and are in the early steps of planning a large Rose garden on the Museum grounds.

Mission

"Dedicated to the preservation and Interpretation of Wharton County History"

History

The Museum was started by Wharton local Eve Bartlett in the late 1970's. The Museum took up residence in the "old Wharton Jail" in 1984. It remained there until 1990, when it moved onto land provided by Wharton natives/multi-millionare Marshall and Lillie Johnson, through their Johnson Foundation. The Museum was created using both the Johnson's office and personal home, with additions the two were joined and now house the entire Museum under one unit. The Museum specializes in Wharton/Texas history.

Artifact Collections

Along with the history of Wharton county and all it entails (war, religion, college, agriculture, sports, commerce) The Museum also has a trophy room given to the Museum by Marshall and Lillie Johnson. The room includes animals brought back from around the world. We also have the childhood home of Dan Rather on the Museum grounds (as he was a native of Wharton County) and we are also proud to be the birthplace of famous author Horton Foote.
