Description

The museum is located at 824 East Avenue on the square in Wellington. Exhibits tell the story of the county beginning when Indians wandered through the area, through the invsasion by land barons as they built large ranches, the occupation of much of that land by homesteaders when barb wire and windmills made it possible for family farms to become established. Today's history is being made by well-educated farmers and ranchers with the latest techniques and equipment in peanut and cotton farming, livestock, and game hunt leasing. Exhibits in the Art Center are usually by local or Panhandle artists, prepared by the Collingworth Art League.

Mission

The Collingsworth County Museum seeks to preserve the heritage and arts of this unique area of the eastern Texas Panhandle for future generations. Through the presentation of history and local culture, the Museum seeks to instill pride in the past, reaffirm the quality of life in the present, and promote growth in the future.

History

The Museum was chartered in 1971 with Clyde Drake as president and Mrs. Nora Drake as the first administrator and curator. In 1972 Hershel and Mildred Tyler gave a building on 15th street as the first home of the Museum.
