The Center for Creative Photography is a research institution with a robust program of exhibitions and public lectures. It is the largest institution in the world devoted to documenting the history of North American photography. At the heart of the Center are the archives of over 200 photographers, scholars, galleries, and organizations, comprised of 4.5 million items, complemented by an unparalleled collection of over 90,000 fine prints. These collections continue to dynamically grow through gift and purchase, and we continue to promote them at our website. Recently, we unveiled the new Laura Volkerding Study Center, where researchers will be able to study items from the fine prints collection side-by-side with negatives, transparencies, correspondence, and other manuscript and visual materials. This new space accompanied with greater support for scholarship through our growing research fellowship and visiting scholars program will enable CCP to refresh its standing as the foremost center in North America for the creation of new knowledge about photography today and the history of photography.
Beyond our four walls, the Center's collections and research services have a direct impact on the creation of new knowledge about photography today and the history of photography. We offer curators and scholars the resources to borrow and curate exhibits at their institutions, to write journal articles, books, and exhibition catalogs that are read by thousands, and create new websites accessible to the world. Photographers are inspired by studying our collections, and their creativity expands the universe of art for the world to enjoy.
Founded in 1975 by then-University of Arizona President John P. Schaefer and photographer Ansel Adams, the Center for Creative Photography is the largest institution in the world devoted to documenting the history of North American photography. Here one can survey the complete archives of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Harry Callahan, Aaron Siskind, Frederick Sommer, W. Eugene Smith, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Garry Winogrand, and other great photographers of the modern era. The Center's 5,000 square-foot gallery hosts an ongoing stream of original exhibitions that travel to venues around the world and a permanent collection gallery features selected highlights of photographic history. To accompany its exhibitions and share knowledge about the medium of photography, the Center offers lectures, tours, and many other educational opportunities. It also publishes exhibition catalogues and books on the history of photography, its theory, criticism, and practice.
The fine print art collection of the Center for Creative Photography is one of the finest in the world, with more than 80,000 photographs representing more than 2,000 photographers. Although the collection's main strength is photography by twentieth-century American and Mexican artists, the Center holds significant collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century photography from around the world. Some of the photographers in the art collection include Ansel Adams, Lola Alvarez Bravo, Richard Avedon, Ernest Bloch, Josef Breitenbach, Dean Brown, Wynn Bullock, Harry Callahan, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Andreas Feininger, William Mortensen, Marion Palfi, Aaron Siskind, W. Eugene Smith, Frederick Sommer, Peter Stackpole, Edward Steichen, Paul Strand, Tseng Kwong Chi, Laura Volkerding, and Edward Weston.
The research collection at the Center for Creative Photography includes the archival materials of over 200 twentieth-century photographers, more than any other institution in the nation. Archives typically include manuscripts, photographic materials, photographs, negatives, albums, work prints, audiovisual materials, contact sheets, correspondence, memorabilia and other unique artifacts relevant to the history of twentieth-century photography.
The Center for Creative Photography offers a variety of free public programs, exhibition tours, and educators' resources to help viewers understand, appreciate, and gain new perspectives on photography through study of our collections and changing exhibitions.
