Description

The goal at the center is to provide the public with an awareness of the Chumash People and their historical, cultural, material and present day interactions throughout Southern California. A blend of resources are used to accommodate a wide variety of interests!

As part of the Santa Monica Mountain Range, the Chumash Indian Museum is surrounded with the natural beauty of lush medows, large oak groves and native vegetation. A variety of fowl and wildlife can be seen throughout the 432 acre park. Unique landscapes and rock formations as well as Chumash sites can be observed within the park. Hiking is allowed within certain restricted areas, and all visitors must abide by the center's regulations and guidelines.

Our Gift Shop is open to the public (with or without museum admission). The Gift Shop features traditional Native American handcrafted artifacts and crafts. An array of books related to the Chumash people and their culture are available. The Gift Shop accepts Visa & Mastercard.

The Chumash Indian Museum is scheduling field trips for the 2010/11 school year. The Chumash Indian Museum offers students the rich history of the Chumash people. Students travel back in time, beginning with the extensive museum exhibits, continuing to the game field where they play the game Ma'pon (rabbit game) and visit the "Aps (houses). The two and one half hour program includes stories and songs of the Chumash people.

Our guided nature hikes are open to the public by reservation on Saturdays and Sundays. Special weekly hikes may be scheduled with advance notice. Please call first to make reserveations. There is a 10 person minimum necessary to schedule a hike. You may join an already scheduled hike. Please call first for availability. The fee for the hike is $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children 12 and under. Hikes begin at 10:00A.M. sharp (unless other arrangements are made) and are approximately 2 1/2 hours long. It is recommended that you wear long pants and comfortable walking shoes.

Membership* with the Chumash Indian Museum is your exclusive ticket to the facinating exhibits and special events at one of Venutra County's most unique museums. Purchasing a membership is an opportunity to contribute to the Museum Foundation, a non-profit museum, help develop, preserve and maintain the museum and support our educational programs.
