Figge Art Museum
Davenport, Iowa
Description

Our museum truly brings people and art together. We offer workshops, classes, lectures, films, and of course art in our permanent collection, including our renowned Haitian collection. We also bring numerous world-class exhibitions to our museum. Most of all, we strive to be an arts center for the community.

Mission

The Figge Art Museum, formerly the Davenport Museum of Art, actively serves the public by collecting, conserving and exhibiting art, and by promoting appreciation and creation of visual art through education. As a vital, responsive institution, the Museum brings art and people together, expands the knowledge and love of art and enriches the life of the community through the power of art.

History

The Davenport Municipal Art Gallery opened in 1925, through a gift of 350 European and Mexican Colonial paintings, creating the first municipal art gallery in the State of Iowa. Today, the collections have grown over ten-fold and include more than 3,500 paintings, sculpture, and works on paper from the 16th century to the present.

Artifact Collections

Archives include the Grant Wood archives, including the furniture he had in his home. These are being conserved for scholarly use.

Research Collections

Our research library is open to the public.

Programs

The focus of the Figge Art Museum is directed about 60 percent toward education through student-art exhibitions, gallery tours, a fine docent program, educators guides, workshops, school tours, lectures and performances. Fees are dependent upon each individual program.
