Wyoming Veterans' Memorial Museum
Casper, Wyoming
Description

The Wyoming Veterans' Memorial Museum is a non-typical military venue that is exclusively focused on the personal, intimate, and sensitive stories of the individuals who have participated in the military, military conflict and ancillary military services. This institution is not a warehouse for racks of weaponry and piles of gear. The museum is not micro-focused on an individual service, branch, or conflict. It does have a collection of material from the original Air Base, but it is not the keynote exhibit. The veterans are showcased and rotated often. Our displays with their stories evoke powerful emotions. The museum is a memorial for all those who have served this country.

The museum has operated in an institutional vacuum. I am launching it into a national forum of museum and military research institutions where it will be a warm home for students, researchers, veterans, and the public. A five-ten year strategic goal is a new modern museum and conservatory.

Mission

The Mission of the Wyoming Veterans Memorial Museum is to leverage the military history, heritage and culture of the state of Wyoming to benefit the state and its citizens.

History

The Casper Army Air Base was activated on September 1, 1942. Hundreds of B-17 and B-24 bomber crews trained there and later flew on to conduct such significant missions as the Ploesti Oil Field Raids, the bombing of the factories at Schweinfurt, and bombing Tokyo. The Air Base was placed on the National Register in 2001 and in 2002, the museum was established in the original enlistedmens' club. Since its inception, it has been operated exclusively by volunteers. Today it houses a comprehensive collection of Veterans' memorabilia and the stories associated with the material. The museum participates in the Veterans' History Program.

Artifact Collections

Materials and stories associated with military veterans, families, and service personnel from Wyoming.

Research Collections

The museum has a non-indexed library, as well as a cataloged collection of original literature (letters, diaries, unit histories, an the like) from pre-World War I through the present Global War on Terrorism. Additionally, it has a wide range of artifacts from the Casper Air Base (WWII 1942-1945).

Programs

Presently, all that is available is personal gallery tours, use of the non-indexed library, and limited topic lectures. By fall of 2008, there will be a more comprehensive program of work study and docent opportunities, lectures, and workshops.
