Description

The mission of the hall of fame is to educate the public on the role Jews have played in sports - an area of Jewish accomplishment often overlooked. The hall of fame has grown so much in the past few years that soon we will need to embrak on a capital campaign, assuming the economy turns around.

History

Begun in 1993, the hall oif fame started as a Long Island Jewish Sports Hall of fame - we had been told that there was going to be a N.Y. Jewish Sports Hall of fame. In 1994, we learned that the NY HOF was not going to open, so we grew to include all of NY state. Five years ago we learned that the national Jewish sports HOF that was supposed to open was not going to, and we went national.

Artifact Collections

Uniforms pertaining to many of the athletes, with other artifacts as well.

Research Collections

There is a good deal of archival footage of the honorees, including of the inductions as well, that we plan to digitalize and make accessible to the public.

Educational Programs

We offer a free program, geared for children ages 8 and up, as well as adult groups, "Jewish Sports Legends." This program looks at the American Jewish experience in sports from the 1800's to today - we produced a film and we show this film to groups, either in the HOF or at their facility, and havea discussion after viewing the film.

Governance

Under the auspices of The Suffolk Y JCC.
