The purpose of the Heritage Museum of Northwest Florida is to collect and preserve material culture pertaining to the region’s history, to illuminate economic and social history through research and exhibits, and to inspire interest in Florida’s heritage by offering educational programs and services to the public.

Started as the Historical Society of Okaloosa and Walton Counties, the Heritage Museum of Northwest Florida opened its doors in 1971 in its present location in the former Valparaiso State Bank and Okaloosa-Walton Junior College campus.
