Description

Nestled on the western shore of Otsego Lake, housed in an elegant 1930s neo-Georgian mansion, the Fenimore Art Museum presents a perspective on the heritage and history of America through art. The beauty of the museum setting is matched by the quality of the collections it houses, including some of the nation’s finest examples of American landscape, history and genre paintings, American folk art, photography and American Indian art.

William Sidney Mount, Thomas Cole, Gilbert Stuart, Benjamin West, E.L. Henry, Eastman Johnson, Thomas Waterman, John Wesley Jarvis, Grandma Moses and Ralph Fasanella are all represented in the museum’s holdings.

Fenimore is a name long associated with Cooperstown and The New York State Historical Association. From James Fenimore Cooper to the Fenimore Art Museum now located on the site of Edward Severin Clark’s Fenimore Farm. It is in this tradition that our leadership donor group is named the Fenimore Society. Fenimore Society members contribute $1,000 or more annually in support programs, educational initiatives and the Research Library. We invite you to Show Your Support! by joining the Fenimore Society. For more information, please contact Teresa Leveille at (607) 547-1425

The natural beauty and rich history of Fenimore Art Museum and The Farmers' Museum create a unique setting for any special event. The museums' expert event planning staff can help you with the details of any function from meetings and conferences to the most formal weddings and receptions. A number of locations throughout the properties are available to accommodate a variety of needs.

The terrace gardens of Fenimore Art Museum offer an elegant setting overlooking historic Otsego Lake. The gardens and neo-Georgian museum building provide a timeless background for any event. The gazebos in the gardens are a special location for a small luncheon meeting, tea or dinner. The lush lawn behind the museum sweeps to the lakeshore from the terrace and is a magnificent site for a luncheon, dinner or elegant wedding reception. Tents accommodating up to 1000 guests can be situated on the lawn.

History

The Fenimore Art Museum is the showcase of the New York State Historical Association, which is the not-for-profit corporate entity governing the operations of the museum. The New York State Historical Association was founded in 1899 by New Yorkers who were interested in promoting greater knowledge of the early history of the state. They hoped to encourage original research, to educate general audiences by means of lectures and publications, to mark places of historic interest with tablets or signs, and to start a library and museum to hold manuscripts, paintings, and objects associated with the history of the state.

The Fenimore Art Museum is dedicated to integrating history with art history and including under-appreciated genres, primarily American folk art and American Indian art, in a broad and progressive American canon. The Fenimore Art Museum seeks to honor the extraordinary ability of ordinary people to shape American culture.
