Description

The society and its museum is a big accomplishment for a small town (population 900), initiated and supported almost exclusely by local interest and donations. It has a beautiful, modern building full of exhibits. We welcome everyone. We are working for increased accessibility and outreach programs. Next year, two goals are improving use of our log cabin and recognizing the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with research, exhibits and programs.

History

The historical society was formed in Butler, Ohio, in 1979 and built its museum in 1987. This building was doubled in size in 2009 to 6,000 square feet. Other assets include a restored log cabin and a railroad storage building, both in Butler. It is an all-volunteer organization.

Artifact Collections

Exhibits, focusing on Butler and Worthington Township, include antique household goods of local families, school memorabilia, local manufactured goods and business advertising, military material, wood carvings of Harley Ward, the extensive toy collections of Hal McCuen and Harley Ward.

Research Collections

The museum's archives include files on local families and other genealogical and historical resources, albums of historical photographs, original family papers and scrapbooks, Bibles, village and township records, oral history recordings.

Educational Programs

Public open houses are scheduled twice a month April-October with guided tours available by appointment. Third-graders tour every year as part of their local history curriculum. The office, archives and library are open one day a week for research. Research by mail is handled on a request-by-request basis.
