Description

Designed by the renowned architectural firm of Carrere and Hastings to be a home for the industrialist John Pitcairn and his young family, Cairnwood evokes the grandeur of the Gilded Age with its intimacy, beauty and elegance. Today, while it maintains the atmosphere of a private home, Cairnwood is a National Historic Landmark and is open to public, featuring guided tours, and special programs.

Tours

Tours of Cairnwood Estate reveal the history and inhabitants of this beautiful Beaux Arts building. John Pitcairn, a Scottish immigrant, who through hard work and ingenuity joined the ranks of industrialists such as Rockefeller and Carnegie, lived here from its construction in 1895 until his death in 1916. Tour participants can see the private side of a family integral to the founding of the New Church, Bryn Athyn College, and Bryn Athyn itself. Several parts of the estate are open to the public, including the main house, the garden house, and the carriage house, which features a number of restored horse-drawn carriages and sleighs. View our award winning video and visit the gift shop and garden.

Weddings

If you are looking for a spectacular setting for your wedding, then come behind the high stone walls that seclude Cairnwood from the rest of the world. Here you’ll find the private estate of 19th Century industrialist John Pitcairn who created his elegant sanctuary utilizing the skills and talents of the best artisans and craftsmen of the time. The result is an architectural masterpiece from the Gilded Age, Cairnwood.
