Description

To cross the threshold of the Craft & Folk Art Museum is to enter a realm of life-affirming, culturally-nourishing, mind-expanding possibilities. It is a collaborative work in process, functioning as catalyst, bridge, and magic mirror. It draws together the passions, discoveries and dreams of collectors, curators and designers. It combines traditional and folk art with the creations of contemporary craft artists. It transforms them, through the medium of its unique space on museum row, into powerful exhibitions. These experiences bridge the ethnically diverse cultures of Los Angeles and return to them, as in a mirror, the affirming revelation: what you see is what you are and it is wonderful.

History

The Craft & Folk Art Museum was founded by Edith R. Wyle in 1965 as The Egg & The Eye. It was her intent to reinvigorate contemporary craft arts by bringing them into direct relationship with the authentic and spontaneous diversity of folk art. It was a bold, original, intuitive act which continues to benefit the community through a sustained program of Exhibition, Education, and Publication.
