Description

The Hill Aerospace Museum is a field museum of the United States Air Force. Hill Aerospace Museum is located on approximately 30 acres of the northwest corner of Hill Air Force Base, five miles south of Ogden, Utah.

STEM Education Program

Hill Aerospace Museum also has a STEM Education program housed in the Lt. General Marc C. Reynolds Aerospace Center for Education. The mission of the Reynolds Aerospace Center for Education is to bolster area youth by promoting interest in STEM Education. The ACE experience enhances and inspires more than 40,000 K-12 students each year as they are exposed to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Mission

The Mission of the Hill Aerospace Museum is to Educate and inspire all ages through history, with a focus on the United States Air Force, Hill Air Force Base, Utah Aviation, and unique learning experiences.

History

The Hill Aerospace Museum, which opened in 1986, was founded in 1981 as a part of the United States Air Force Heritage Program. The museum moved to its current facility in 1991 and hosted its four millionth visitor in the spring of 2014. More than 185,000 visitors, coming from every state and from many foreign countries, visited the museum last year.

Not only does the Museum have close to 100 aircraft displayed in its two inside galleries and outside air park, it exhibits thousands of artifacts depicting the history of aviation of the United States Air Force, Hill Air Force Base and the State of Utah.

Artifact Collections

The Hill Aerospace Museum artifacts collection consists of over 4,000 objects, including aircraft, military vehicles, missiles, ordnance, military uniforms, artwork, and many other types of historical items. All of our objects are actually the property of the United States Air Force Museum System, of which we are a field museum. At any one time, only about 20 percent of our collection is on exhibit.

Hill Aerospace Museum adheres closely to the principles of preventive conservation, whereby we seek to prevent, reduce, or mitigate the effects of all the factors that, every day, threaten the continued survival of our collection objects. Many of our aircraft undergo refurbishment or complete restoration, but we do not conduct remedial conservation on other objects in the collections. For that we rely on the Conservation Laboratory at the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio.

Our collection artifacts and aircraft are exhibited in five eras corresponding to our interpretive timeline: The Beginnings, World War II, Dawn of the Jet Age, The Cold War, and Keeping the Peace.

Lindquist Art Gallery

Most of our artwork is shown in the Lindquist Art Gallery, although many other pieces are displayed at various other locations throughout our buildings.

Research Collections
Museum library

The museum library is maintained as a repository of technical and historical information to aid the staff and volunteers in the design and creation of exhibits, in-depth research to support aircraft restoration, and the generation of educational programming. Due to staffing limitations, the museum library is currently closed to the public. Sorry, but we simply cannot conduct historical or technical research for the public at this time.

Educational Programs

The Hill Aerospace Museum offers a robust education program that aims at teaching STEM Education concepts and principles to children K- 12. The program focuses on co-curricular subjects and activities relating directly to the State of Utah?s Science curriculum. Our education staff teaches students the basics of flight, astronomy, weather, motion, gravity, forces of nature, and many other areas.

The Hill Aerospace Museum and the Aerospace Heritage Foundation of Utah are committed to the legacy of those who have served our country. For that purpose, we have created education programs and activities that reach thousands of students. The Museum?s Aerospace Center for Education (ACE) brings over 60,000 students to the museum each year. Partnerships with school districts, colleges and universities, are critical piece of the education puzzle.

The mission of the Aerospace Center for Education is to strengthen America's youth by promoting interest in aerospace science, thereby enabling the United States Air Force and our Nation to continue leading the world in aerospace technology and national defense. STEM, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math is at the forefront of our curriculum. The Museum STEM Education experience will enhance and inspire these students to possibly pursue an aerospace-related field as a career.
