Description

The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center (SQCC) is open to the public M-F 10:00 - 4:00. Browse SQCC's exhibition space to learn more about the beauty and culture of the Sultanate of Oman. Check our website for information on special exhibitions, lectures, cultural events, and more! Visit our library, or borrow remotely through your library's ILL system.

Mission

The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center (SQCC) is dedicated to educating the peoples of the United States and Oman about the breadth and richness of our two cultures. SQCC promotes mutual respect and understanding between our nations and strives to educate a new generation of culturally sensitive and knowledgeable citizens in each society. Through outreach programs, scholarships, lectures, educational resources, cultural partnerships, and our Cultural Center in Washington, DC, SQCC brings the culture, history, and heritage of our nations to audiences in the US and abroad.

History

SQCC was founded in 2005. During our first eight years, we resided at the Middle East Institute. In 2013, SQCC left MEI and bought a property at the corner of 16th & L Streets NW, just a few blocks from the White House. SQCC is a program of the Omani government, and is affiliated with the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman.

Artifact Collections

Omani handicrafts including silver, basketry, pottery, carpets, traditional clothing and jewelry. Exhibitions on historic forts, falaj water system. Special exhibitions on rotation - check www.sqcc.org for more information

Research Collections

SQCC's library holds the largest collection of books on the Sultanate of Oman in the United States. Books may be borrowed through the ILL system worldwide. SQCC in 2019 will launch an Ocean of Paper, which contains some 5,000 documents tracing the genealogy and mobility of 19th Century Omanis conducting business across the Indian Ocean - see indianoceanhistory.org for more information.

Educational Programs

Academic lectures, cultural events, poetry night, teacher training workshops, gallery tours and lectures for visiting groups (all ages, English and Arabic available; Arabic language programs on scholarship for working professionals, university students, and children. Academic conferences, cultural festivals, research fellowships, study abroad.

Facilities

Our 30,000 sq ft facility is inclusive of exhibition space, a library, lecture space, function space, and classrooms.
