Description

An authentic picture of people and life in Mariposa County from the migration of its first inhabitants, through the Spanish and Mexican periods, to the famed California Gold Rush and the recent past. Indian artifacts, mining equipment, historic buildings, family collections, and research/archive department.

Mission

Facilitate the development and growth of the museum collection through the acquisition, preservation, exhibition, and interpretation of the artifacts of Mariposa County for the dedicated purpose of educating the public about the history and culture of its past residents.

History

Founded in 1957, the museum is a non profit corporation administered by a board of 14 directors, and staffed by volunteer docents.

Artifact Collections

Antiquities, archaeology, archives, basketry, period clothing, ethnic & tribal art, furniture, historic buildings, mining equipment, jewelry, mineralogy, painting, photography, prints/drawing, mercantile store.

Research Collections

Mariposa County government records dating to 1849. Pioneer Family documents and photos. Local gold mining information.

Educational Programs

Group tours and research services may be arranged with advanced notice. Monthly "Fireside Chat" history talks, call museum for times and dates.
